Team 5870 Walking for a Cure!
Who are we?
Team 5870 consists of four women from Minnesota, Barb, Deb, Cheryl and Virginia. We are partcipating in the 2002 Avon 3-Day Walk for Breast Cancer Awareness. We will be walking from Kenosha WI to Chicago IL (60 miles!!) on June 14, 15 & 16.
Barb and Virgina have done the walk before. Barb did the walk in 2000. She then found out she had breast cancer, battled it and will be walking as a SURVIVOR!
Virginia did the walk last year and simply doesn't know how to "JUST SAY NO!" Actually she is very happy to be partcipating again this year as it is an excellent way to raise money and awareness.
Deb and Cheryl are doing the walk for the first time this year. Cheryl is quickly becoming an exercise-aholic training for this event. Deb is a school teacher and probably getting her training running around the classroom.
Naturally Barb has been and continues to be an inspiration to the rest of Team 5870.
Why Walk?
Every year too many of our Mothers, Daughters, Sisters and Wives are forced to battle breast cancer. Breast cancer is not gender specific and many men are faced with this disease as well.
Early detection is the key to survival. Each participant must raise $1900 in pledges. The money raised through this event will sponsor a varitey of programs through Avon's Breast Cancer Crusade. Programs that support medical research, education and outreach programs designed to ensure that all women have access to affordable mammograms benefit from this event.

No, we aren't going to ask you to walk 60 miles but.......you can join us by sponsoring us with a pledge. We have tried to make it easy. You can donate directly from our site, just go to the donate link on this page. You can make a Team 5870 pledge or sponsor a specific walker.

Cheryl has contacted the local florist and arranged for them to donate pink carnations for us to sell!!! Way to go Cheryl!
We have been invited to appear with Michelle Lee of News 6! Our interview with Michelle Lee aired on Feb. 6, and we were very pleased. They incorporated footage from one of last year's walks....it was very impressive.
Also, the folks at KISS Radio, 92.1 have invited us to be on their morning show Feb. 12 at 8:35 am. Jean and Miles of KISS Radio 92.1 were great! They helped us do an informative interview and reach a ton of people.
The Duluth News Tribune mentioned us in the Good Deeds section of the Feb.6 paper.
The Ely, MN local newspaper called and did an article on Barb while the Cloquet, MN local paper, the Pine Knot is going to do an article featuring Cheryl! What a great job the Pine Knot of Cloquet did....Thanks!!!

Pledge Udates:
As a group Team 5870 raised approximately $10,000 for the cause. The Chicago event had over 6,000 walkers and raised over 11 million dollars! It was a moving experience!
